Our 6th and 7th grade art club members took a field trip to the Jefferson City Museum of Modern Art. Most of our group had not visited before, and it was a great opportunity to see original artworks.  We viewed the artwork of Purvis Young , who's artwork is also exhibited at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. Students also saw art by Thornton Dial , who has artwork on sale at Christie's for $225,000 starting. We interacted with the vibrant, detailed work of Aboudia ; who's works have been exhibited globally in New York, London, Paris, Barcelona, as well as Art Central in Hong Kong .  7th and 8th grade students worked together on this project. Students engaged with tessellations in their math classes, and then came to the art room to learn about a famous artist and create their own art.  Students explored the artworks of MC Escher. Students learned about Escher's use of shapes, depth, and tessellations in his artwork.  Then students voted on what type of tessellation they wanted to create. After choosing their tessellations, students applied their knowledge of shape, movement, pattern, and color or greyscale, to create an original artwork.  Each student then had the opportunity to connect their work with classmates in one tessellating work of art.  Check out our work in the upstairs hallway, and photographed below: 

St. Peter Catholic School artists are participating in a nation-wide effort to encourage and inspire people suffering in Ukraine.  Ms. Thurman connected with other art rooms in the USA who are creating artwork in solidarity with the Ukrainian families affected by the war. Art students participated in creating uplifting and empowering artwork using various mediums, including paint, oil pastel, markers, and colored pencils to communicate a message of compassion and hope.  Art students learned that, throughout history, artists have come together to create artwork to support those suffering. Students engaged with symbols representing peace and unity in their artwork. We reflected on Pope Francis's call to the "peacemakers" to become helpers during the war.  We stand in solidarity with the families suffering in Ukraine. We hope that our messages of Jesus's love and compassion will bring them peace during this grievous war. Ms. Thurman is busy scanning and uploading our art...

 Grades sixth through eighth have been working hard to create a winter canvas using paint. Check out their artworks in the sixth grade hallway! 

 Students spent first quarter learning about creative process.  They met various objectives throughout the quarter to complete a final, finished project. This included brainstorming, practicing technique, planning a layout, and finally: creating their poster.  Throughout the creative process students learned about various artists, including Bonnie Maclean who created the first Rock posters for the famous Fillmore Concert venue. We discussed different design elements through observing Maclean's artworks to gain inspiration for our posters.  Students also covered artists such as Toulouse-Lautrec and Alfred Mucha for inspiration and context into the art world. We discussed themes of art as advisements and functions of street art.  We applied this knowledge to our own artwork.  Pictured below: 8th through 6th grade posters.
