Self-Portrait with Words

Image
6th-8th grade students are creating their first project of the year!  Students are refining their drawing skills this quarter by creating their own "About Me" Poster. They will be practicing techniques that will further assist their work in future drawings/paintings. Students are focusing on movement, graphic design and color to complete this project.  To prepare for our "About Me" poster, students learned about popular artists of the  Psychedelic   Rock Poster Trend , as well as the Art Nouveau Movement. Students participated in a group discussion about the artworks of Bonnie MacLean. We used words like organic, cryptic and natural to describe the themes in various works and architecture. Students discussed how Maclean's art has a function, and is used for advertisement and marketing.  Students will be spending the next several class periods working in the "studio" as they plan and create their project. Shape and Line in Art

Image
K-5 Students are learning about Shape and Line. This week we discussed the work of Dutch Artist Piet Mondrian. We talked about various paintings that Mondrian made throughout his career. Students identified Shapes, Lines and Colors in the artworks.  Students participated in a group activity discussing Mondrian's most famous work, The Broadway Boogie Woogie, 1942-43.  Students then created their own abstract art designs using cardstock paper and graphite pencil. We will be spending time next week bringing our artworks to life by adding color.  You can discuss Shape and Line in Art, Mondrian's artwork and the Abstract Art Movement with your student by reading together this  article .  Pictured above:  Piet Mondrian  Composition C (No.III) with Red, Yellow and Blue  © 2007 Mondrian/Holtzman Trust c/o HCR International, Warrenton, VA  Pictured right: Peit Mondrian, Broadway Boogie Woogie, 1942-43.

My name is Kelsey Thurman. I am thrilled to be partnering with you to bring a fun, creative Art Classroom experience to students! I have been practicing Fine Arts and Digital Arts since I was an elementary student, and currently enjoy making art with the help of my Cricut machine.   I received my professional degree from Missouri State University in Religious Studies and Art History. Currently, I attend Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Columbia, Missouri.  It is my joy to teach a wholesome, creative Art Education that connects students to their community through a love of their faith and an understanding of the Fine Arts, Art History, and Media Arts.  I am looking forward to a wonderful first year filled with creative expression that inspires students to love God, their Catholic faith, and learning! Sincerely, Ms. Thurman
