3-5 Keith Haring "Draw with Me"

Image
Students in Grades 3-5 did a "draw with me." Students spent studio time drawing a step by step Keith Haring Image with Ms. Thurman. They also worked together to give feedback and artistic tips!  This exercise focused on refining listening skills and conditioning fine motor skills. Students realized that a combination of Shape and Line helped create a beautiful artwork.  The motto for our studio work is "It doesn't have to be perfect, it just has to be mine." Students learned that artwork is personal to the artist and that they can feel empowered by creating work that reflects their personality.  Carly Woodward, 4th grade Isabella Stock, 4th grade.  Silvia Boicourt, 4th grade.

Image
The past few class periods students in grades 6-8th have been working towards creating their "About Me" poster. This project challenges students to create a self portrait and find words that reflect their personality. Previous student examples are shown below.               We have been learning about the Art Nouveau movement to help brainstorm different elements for our posters. Students engaged with famous artists like  Alphonse Mucha and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec.                                               Students viewed many different Rock Posters featuring artistic elements from the Art Nouveau movement. They learned how art can evolve over the decades but still stay the same. We engaged with the Kaleidoscopic trends in art work done by Wes Wilson and Bonnie MacLean.     Students learned about n...

Pattern in Art

In the art room  we are discussing Pattern in Art. Students are building on their "Line and Shape" art skills. We will tackle projects in this unit that explore various art mediums featuring patterns.   This week students engaged with several artworks featuring pattern elements. We discussed two different types of patterns, and learned how to spot the different patterns on artwork we encounter everyday!  Students will spend the next two weeks further developing their knowledge base of artwork featuring these elements as well as practicing their skills creating 3 projects dealing with patterns.  Pictured above:  Kandinsky, Color Study, 1913. This painting features a regular pattern. Students used this artwork as a reference for creating their own regular pattern.  Pictured Above: First grade student using repeating shapes and colors to create a regular pattern.     Pictured left: First grade student using four repeating colors to create...

Berhorst went with the name "Two Colors with Silver" for her piece.  Reese  Hoecker of the 5th grade is a St Peter Artist of the Week. This composition is done in graphite pencil with excellent use of shading and blending. Hoecker is quoted stating that she "...likes hot air balloons" and that is "what I was thinking about." Row House Art

Students in grades K-5th  worked hard this week  in the art room!  We learned about Warm and Cool Colors. We talked about Warm and Cool Colors on  Row Houses in the city of New Orleans, USA. Then we looked at Row House Art. Pictured Right: first grade student finishes coloring her row houses. She chose markers as her medium and worked with warm colors.    Students applied what they learned using Shape and Line in Abstract Art to design their own Row Houses. They chose a medium to color their Row Houses with Warm or Cool Colors.  Pictured Left: first grade student displays finished work.
